October 26, 2007 Intelligence. o The precise definition depends on the test. Boring. o Intelligence is what the intelligence test measures.  Tautology. Wechsler. o Intelligence is the aggregate or global capacity of the person to act  purposefully, think rationally and deal effectively with his/her  environment. This test now replaces the old Stanford Binet Test. Galton. o Intelligence is related to exceptional sensory and perceptual skills. o Smart people should have larger head sizes and better visual and  auditory abilities than “normals.” He was wrong. Alfred Binet (1881). o Chronological age (how old you are) vs. mental age (that age that  shows how advanced you are in your mental capacity). Stanford Binet (Terman, 1916). o IQ. Mental Age / Chronological Age * 100.

Example. Information, vocabulary, knowledge of the world. o Performance Scale. Example. Matrix reason, object assembly. There isnt a high correlation between how well you do in your college class and your intelligence because the people who go to college are a select group of people. The more similar the sample, the smaller the correlation. o Example. In elementary school there is no selection process, everyone goes to elementary school, so the correlation between elementary school and intelligence is stronger than is the correlation between graduate students and intelligence....
