Chapter 1 1 Units We will be dealing with many types of physical quantities, and most physical quantities have units associated with them. Several systems of units are in use today. We will use the “International System ” of units (SI) almost exclusively.

Chapter 1 3 Prefixes Larger and smaller units can be formed from base units using prefixes: mega- 10 6 1,000,000 (M) kilo- 10 3 1,000 (k) centi- 10 -2 0.01 (c) milli- 10 -3 0.001 (m) micro- 10 -6 0.000001 ( μ ) You should memorize these five prefixes. See page 4 of your textbook for a more complete list.

Chapter 1 4 Conversion of Units Often we need to change the units associated with some quantity. For example, we might need to convert a distance in miles into a distance in kilometers. Multiplying any quantity by 1 does not change its value .
Chapter 1 5 Conversion of Units We know that 1 mile = 1.609 km.
