Unit 1 Overview
(What we have explored during the past unit.)
We started out the semester discussing quantitative literacy and the role
it will play in your future coursework, career, and family life. We also
discussed unit conversions (currency, rates of change, measurements,
etc.), the nature of percentages and the role they play in daily living, and
problem solving, and general problem-solving techniques. We finished this
first unit discussing the astonishment of exponential growth and how it
cannot continue indefinitely. We also saw how exponential models differ
from linear models. You were able to get a feel for doubling time or half-
life contexts, the Rule of 70, and you saw some exponential growth and
decay patterns that are all around us in the “real world.”
In your first Excel spreadsheet project you became familiar with a mini-
case study of Sarah Hilliard, a first-semester BYU-Idaho student. In this
