What actually influences gov.? Who does? Voters I. Political socialization: the process through which we form our political opinions. 1. Agents of political soci,- the things that influence us through this process a) Family- play a role (bringing it up at the dinner table) b) Education: 1) Elementary- socialization is the heaviest Kids taught about why America is great Taught core values of democracy (liberty, equality, justice) Respect for national figures and symbols *every morning pledge to our country. 2) High school Patriotism is stressed Controversial topics are addressed (abortion, deathpen., healthcare, war) 3) College- most important Critical thinking skills are stressed Students are encouraged to ask questions and think for themselves! College typically has a “liberalizing” effect among students on social issues. More education = more tolerance for diverse viewpoints. Why? C. religion- Protestant- mainline protestant and catholic: democratic White: republic
