Problem Set #5 Covering Chapters 13, 14,15 &16 of BIOLOGY BILD1 Wi08 PROBLEM 1. MEIOSIS vs. MITOSIS A. You have a DIPLOID cell that has TWO chromosomes. After this cell goes through mitosis, are the two daughter cells genetically identical? Are the two cells haploid or diploid? B. At which stages are microtubules involved in mitosis? At which stages are microfilaments involved in mitosis? C. One of these cells from part (A) decides to go through meiosis. At the end, are all four cells genetically identical? Are the cells haploid or diploid? D. Why does PROPHASE I of Meiosis I take weeks whereas the other stages of meiosis take minutes? E. What is the difference between METAPHASE I and METAPHASE II in MEIOSIS? Which version is more like MITOSIS. (Drawing them can help you remember) PROBLEM 2. MEIOSIS Sometimes, homologues fail to pair up in Meiosis I. As a result when you look at the two daughter cells you find that one is missing a chromosome and the other has an extra chromosome. This problem is called ANEUPLOIDY. A common example of this is Down Syndrome. Down syndrome children are trisomic for chromsome 21 (have 3 copies!). Draw out the stages of Meiosis and fertilization that would result in a zygote with 3 copies of one Chromosome. PROBLEM 3. The language of genetics A. The alleles found in a haploid organism cannot be dominant or recessive. Why is this the case? B. When two genes are located on different chromosomes do they assort dependently or independently? Explain. C.
