World Religions REL 212July 17, 2016Katrina A. Dixon-ParkerWORLD RELIGIONS – REL 212 World ReligionsHINDUISM & JAINISMWEEK 2Cosmogony - Origin of the UniverseHinduism: Hindu belief is there was no heaven or earth. Then water came from nowhere and a giant Cobra containing the Lord Vishnu sleeping, floated in the water. Then energy came from a loud “Ohm” noise. Lord Vishnu woke up and it was no longer night. And born from Vishnu’s belly button was a lotus flower. In the middle of the lotus flower was Brahma. Vishnu gave instruction to Brahma to create the world and he and his cobra disappeared. Brahma then created the heavens, earth, sky, and everything within it. Hindu Creation Myth, Jainism: Jains believe that the universe is without beginning and that it has no creator or destroyer. Our lives are therefore the result of our own deeds: only by our own efforts can we be saved (Fisher, 2014, p. 124). Nature of God/CreatorHinduism: There are many different Gods/Goddess that the Hindus worship, but here are three.Kali is the goddess who is the destroyer of evil. She may be portrayed dripping with blood carrying a sword and a severed head, and wearing a girdle of severed hands and a necklace of skulls (Fisher, 2014, p.85). Lakshmi, embodies wealth, generosity, good fortune, beauty, and charm; she is often depicted as a radiant woman sitting on a waterborne lotus flower (Fisher, 2014, p. 85). Saraswati is also a goddess of music, knowledge, and art.
