Kalisse Richardson Survey of African American History II March 5, 2008 MIDTERM In a detailed, well-developed essay explain the significance of Reconstruction. What were the salient features of the era? What was the goal of the federal Reconstruction program and how were Constitutional, military and legal means utilized to achieve them? Who were the “Radical Republicans” and how did Presidential and Congressional Reconstruction differ? The significance of Reconstruction and the Reconstruction era was that it virtually began to establish the United States of America. One of the first tasks of Reconstruction was to rebuild the Union. After the war, the North was filled with immigrants, they were increasing more industrialized than the South and their systems were more developed. The South had unwillingly let go of their slaves, they faced having to create new systems and currency, and a large portion of their population wanted to leave for better lives.
