CVEN 4545 - Steel Design George.Hearn@colorado.edu BEAM MOMENT STRENGTH Moment strengths are computed for a set of steel W shapes. These are the same W shapes used in the example for beam section properties. For this example, beams are fully braced. AISC Specification Chapter F- Moment Strength The nominal moment strength of braced compact section is the plastic moment strength. For a shape with non-compact flanges (W14x99 in this example), the nominal moment strength is computed by interpolation between the plastic moment strength and 70% of the yield moment. The following moment strengths are obtained.
