February 9, 2008 Zipcar: Refining the Business Model The most relevant information that must be analyzed as far as commercial opportunity is concerned are competition in the market, profitability of product, and target market characteristics. These categories are interrelated and a change in one can affect the others. The characteristics of the market, the size and demographics of the target market, is directly related to profitability of the product. Competition can also affect profitability, which is essentially the most important factor when deciding to commercialize. If the product will not make money, then why commercialize? One must make sure that these three factors lead to a profitable business before pursuing the opportunity. The assumption that there will be a healthy demand for the product at the projected price is of great importance in this plan.
