Ocean 102 – Study Guide 2 Matthew Maury was the first guy to write book on oceanography. Used depth sounding to find the route for the transatlantic cable. Thomson – used leadline sounding, trenches. Wanted to map the sea floor. Sunken continent. Believed Maurice Ewing – Heezen’s boss. Believed there was no continental drift. Harry Hess – measuring gravity at trench. Did lots of geopoetry. Tuzo Wilson – took all the ideas of other people and honed it all down to the current day theory of plate tectonics. James and John Ross – first captured starfish and worms from ocean floor. Edward Forbes – motivated by curiosity, believed there was a decreasing abundance as you went deeper. This was believed because they didn’t have adequate equipment. Pioneered azoic theory. Forbes – tested Azoic theory, and doubted it because he found animals below 330 fathoms. Theorized that the deep sea was a museum of living fossils. Haeckel, Logan, and Dawson – attempted to explain origin of life. Evidence:
