I will also schedule extra office hours before exams if there is demand Teaching Assistants: Qinwen Tan, Mario Jales Course Website: http://blackboard.cornell.edu/ Required Materials: A small readings packet will be available for purchase soon from the bookstore and will also be on reserve at the library. Additional readings will be posted on the course website. All students must register on the course web page (first register at http://blackboard.cornell.edu/) in order to make use of the materials posted there. I will use blackboard to record some grades. Not enrolling in Blackboard may delay your receipt of a grade for this class. Also note that I removed last semester’s posting and reset the site on August 22. If you enrolled before then, make sure you are still enrolled. Some students have found it useful to review some of their microeconomics in the first half of the class. Should you wish to do so, I recommend Economics of Strategy by Besanko, Dranove, Shanley, and Schaefer. Several copies of this book are available at the library on reserve. The edition does not matter. It is not necessary to buy this book. But, if you are uneasy about your microeconomic background and want a review, this is a good place to start. Materials and assignments will be added to the website throughout the semester or handed out in class. I will post the slides that I will present in class on the website, although I may not do so until the evening before class. You can download these and print them out. I may also post announcements on the Blackboard. If the information is time-sensitive, I will email it. However, you are responsible for checking announcements from time to time. Course Overview: The purpose of this course is to explore the many decisions that firm managers make to maximize profitability. The course will draw from other functional areas including marketing, finance, accounting, human resource management, decision-making, etc. It will rely heavily on many ideas from microeconomics. You should be familiar with basic microeconomics and elementary calculus .
