Soc 2208/DSoc 2090 th -October 9th GS 454-484 1. In a recent conversation, a friend of yours commented that a person’s family background doesn’t much matter in terms of their educational and occupational attainment; instead, attainment boils down to two As: ability and ambition. Based on what you have learned about the attainment process in this course (lecture & readings), assess the extent to which your friend’s “model” accurately describes how people get ahead in advanced industrialized societies today. What variables or predictors are lacking in your friend’s relatively simply model that would help her better understand educational and occupational attainment, including the role of family background? Possible Arguments: - Blau-Duncan Model and Social Psych Model both show evidence that a person’s family background does matter in terms of their educational and occupational attainment based on their influences on ability and ambition - “Ain’t No Makin’ It”: class structure is rigid and durable o Doubt in the “American dream” o Aspiration, application, and intelligence often fail to cut through the firm figurations of structural inequality o Structural constraints on opportunity are debilitating - “American Apartheid”: racial segregation and its characteristic institutional form (the black ghetto) are the ket structural factors responsible for the perpeturation of black poverty in the U o Implication: By confining blacks to a small set of relatively disadvantaged neighborhoods, segregation constitutes a very powerful impediment to black socioeconomic progress Simplified Blau-Duncan Model Father’s education affects father’s prestige and respondent’s education Which can in turn affects occupational prestige Social Psych Models of Attainment How can we understand what drives these affects? Why is there a strong relationship between family background and educational attainment? “Social psychological” factors o Aspirations held by self (your goals) o Expectations held by others Parents Peers Teachers Also incorporate ability, academic performance o These models are trying to incorporate measures of ability

End result of model: Mental ability is meant to be correlated with Father’s SES o Didn’t really care why these kids from kids with higher socioeconomic background had a higher mental ability, just knew it existed o Meant to measure ability more so than grades Academic performance o Some indication of high school GPA o Depends on… Parent’s socioeconomic status (SES) Own ability Residual (Xz in diagram) You cannot entirely predict grades based on parent’s SES and one’s own ability
