2April 10, 1901Dear Diary,It is about time! I thought this day would never come I received my first job after a fewmonths of being here in this new place. The day was January 10thwhen I first received myboarding pass to travel in the cargo of the ship to the Americas. I needed to leave that awful placedue to the fact I had nothing left. My family was gone and I had no job to make an income. Icame here to make my life anew and seek wealth and a family to call my own. The journey that Itraveled across the waters was very dreadful and wet. The living conditions that I had to dealwith were as if I was a prisoner and the smell was awful. This added with all the rats, lice, anddiseases makes me wonder now how me let alone anyone else made it this far. This was the leastof the beginning of my problems.When I had gotten so close to America I was so excited that was until Ellis Island.
