Ending Child Labor: Solutions #4 Laws – Creation and enforcement: - having laws helps end child labor because laws give power to solutions (they can be be enforced), if solutions aren`t connected to laws they won`t work - many countries still don`t have laws or a system of enforcement - Because we have a global economy with global trade, investment and competition, workers` rights and working conditions have been affected. Companies can save money, sell more and be competitive if they pay low wages and abuse labor laws - The ILO has become very important because it creates and promotes international labor standards for countries to follow What is the ILO definition of “child labor”? - Child Labor = children under 12 working in any economic activities, children 12-14 doing more than light work, all children doing any kind of work that enslaves, forcibly recruits, prostitutes, trafficks, forces them into illegal activities or exposes them to hazards. General Minimium Age Light Work (not harmful to child, allows schooling and training, not more than 14 hours/week) Hazardous Wor k (children under 12 working in any economic activities, children 12-14 doing more than light work, all children doing any sort of work that enslaves, forcibly recruits, prostitutes, trafficks, forces them into illegal activities or exposes them to hazards ) Not less than 15 (developed countries) 13 18 (16 in some conditions) Not less than 14 (developing countries) 12 18 (16 in some conditions) Hazards = physical, psychological or sexual abuse, work underground, underwater, at dangerous heights, in small spaces, with dangerous machinery, tools, carrying heavy things, hazardous substances, high temperatures or noise levels, work for long hours, at night, child can`t leave work location ILO Conventions 138, 182 – What are they?
