Europe - statistical information helped consolidate state power and centralize bureaucracies. Enables people to make generalizations. Social statistics- The "Empirical Study of Society" Positivism - the scientific method (not a good thing) - Used theories and methods of natural sciences in the social sciences - usually not a good thing. NOT POSITIVE Taxonomies/Classifications Early sociology, they were trying to mimic physical science. When they started to imagine developing a new field, they borrowed from other sciences - in many ways Sociology is a science.
