Unformatted text preview: DSOC takenote for prelim 2 16/02/2009 13:09:00 Tuesday, October, 7 th Gender under economic science paradigm Gender does not exist fro economists except as an individual preference, biological, status, and in the family division of labor Gary Becker interdependent production and gender in the household Gender is a social category but society may not exist according to economic science Gender under social science paradigm Gender exists as a social category in relation to society Historical materialism: social being determines social consciousness We all have collective means and cooperation in an economic system that contributes to the way we understand the world Gender is defined by social relationships (measured by occupation and property) and family relationships Gender roles in the family may conflict with other roles we want to play in society Music and social consciousness All social categories have moral values attached to them o Logical categories that have feelings and belief systems attached to them Music has a parallel connection between structure (rhythm and chord progression) and what: sounds right (tonality) that varies across cultures and musical types Music becomes part of social life and we respond to it Social concepts are similar to music in that social concepts are relational and evoke feelings about right and wrong; attached to thoughts about the observable world, are abstractions attached to real world issues Peoples relational experience, and is dynamic, like social experience and our understands of gender Understanding of the world is socially constructed and is thus dynamic in that it responds to time, place and ideology Why study gender? Social category tat intersects with other categories such as race and class People experience gender in home and society Gender social stratification arises from labor force and family relations over time Concept of social being determines social consciousness (Marx) applies Gender Definitions Gender social categories associated with sexual dimorphism George Herbert Meads theory of self and generalized other fully developed self is defined in relation to a community of not just individuals, but of social types (including gender types) Fundamentally social beings and behavior is influenced by gender stereotypes Family small kinship-structured group with the key function of nurturing socialization of the newborn Marriage formal commitment between a couple to maintain a loin-term...
