Homework 9 6. Many observations have been made about planetary motion that support the idea that the solar system formed from a rotating cloud of interstellar gas. On clear nights Ptolemy observed dim white patches of light and a rotating cloud of interstellar gas. Besides the clouds that he observed, many catalogues were created for the stars observed by Herschel. Hot gas clouds, globular star clusters, and galaxies were included in this recorded data as the different types. Later, Kant and Laplace used the telescope to observe that all planets revolve around the sun in the same direction. From this, they concluded that the solar system must have formed from a cloud revolving in the same direction. The presence of gases in the cloud led to the formation of planets and the sun. More modern observations support this hypothesis. The interstellar clouds are made up of gas, primarily hydrogen and helium.
