Lesson 13, Part 2 4-20-08 Lesson 13, Part 2 There are many things that need to be taken into consideration to conclude what is the best choice in terms of sustainability and being eco-conscious. The everyday choice example that I have chosen to consider and analyze in terms of sustainability of the biosphere is orange juice from freshly squeezed oranges or orange juice made from concentrate. There are many factors that need to be considered like production, transportation and consumption in terms of costs and energy usages. For instance making orange juice from freshly squeezed oranges consists of harvesting this product, properly storing it and transporting it around the country. There is a great deal of energy consumption in all of these stages of its life-cycle, but there is virtually non during the consumption process. Oranges are mostly squeezed by hand or by a very low energy machines. To determine the better choice you would need to determine the total consumption of energy during the transportation stage.
