Memorandum To: Dr. Walsh From: Vanessa Barela, Student TC 151 Date: February 4, 2005 Subject: Cultural Upbringing and its influence on a person’s opinion The purpose of this memo is to discuss how people from different cultures view a symbol. The assignment was to choose a color or a symbol, show it to at least five people, record their reactions, and record them. For this assignment, the symbol was chosen (Symbol 41b:41). It was shown to seven male students at New Mexico Tech and these were their reactions. The first person was from Texas and grew up close to Mexico. He said that they symbol looked like an angry bird. He then said it looked “really pissed off.” Since he grew up in the Southwest, perhaps this influenced his decision. The symbol could represent a bird if it were looked at as a hieroglyphic. The next student grew up in New Mexico and spent much of his childhood growing up in nature. He is an eagle scout. He believed the symbol to be a bird as well. This could also be for the same reason, similar symbols can be found in the Petroglyphs
