Children are very creative when they are young, but at one point, they are hit by reality and learn that imaginations and playfulness are not employed in the adult world. Drawing is one of the simplest expressions of emotion and communication, but after children hit a certain age the magic is lost. Adults simply cannot see the beauty behind an artistic creation the way a child can. The Little Prince demonstrates this loss when the narrator begins the story. He loved to draw as a child, but when showing his pictures to adults they would never see the same image he did. “But, whoever it was, he, or she, would always say: ‘This is a hat.’ Then I would never talk to that person about boa constrictors, or primeval forests, or stars. I would bring myself down to his level. I would talk to him about bridge, and golf, and politics and neckties. And the grown-up would be greatly pleased to have met such a sensible man” (Saint-Exupéry, pg. 5, 1942). As an allegorical novel The Little Prince, by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, would be an effective teaching tool in a European literature class. It demonstrates imagery and creativity aided by pictures, and is simple to analyze while providing a universal theme. An airplane pilot crashes in the Sahara desert.
