Matt Heelan Citation Exercise Doc. Courington English 110 Mon 6 – 9 Was it a miracle that the 1980 USA Olympic hockey team beat the soviets and went on to win the gold medal? The answer to that question lies in the past. In an ESPN article it said, “ It's the most transcending moment in the history of our sport in this country," gushed Dave Ogrean, former executive director of USA Hockey. "For people who were born between 1945 and 1955, they know where they were when John Kennedy was shot, when man walked on the moon, and when the USA beat the Soviet Union in Lake Placid."(Allen 1) Although some people may not consider this event a miracle it was more than that. I was an event that brought the American people out from a dark time. It gave Americans something to celebrate about and be patriotic and join together about. This event was one that changed the nation and the lives of the people involved. The captain of the team said “Right after we won I got bags of mail," Eruzione said. "It was like in the movie "Miracle on 34th Street" when they bring in all that mail to Santa.
