Due: “Genetically Engineered Food” Biotechnology has been rapidly evolving over the past few decades. Recent discoveries in human genetics and DNA, have led to major medical advances, saved millions of lives, and created a trillion dollar industry in the United States. Large pharmaceutical corporations have been producing thousands of drugs that have prolonged the lives of its users, and driven health- care costs to record highs. The use of biotechnology to pursue cures and vaccines have been accepted with open arms by many, however genetically engineered foods have not yet shared the same success. With a world population that is continuing to see exponential growth, biotechnology has slowly crept into the agricultural industry. Through its use it can alter many crops that lack nutrients to now be able to obtain abundance, increase shelf live, and produce a higher yield of crop. An issue of ethics and uncertainty has been a major deterrent to the social acceptance of genetically engineered food. Genetic engineering is currently an unpractical solution to confront the challenges of world hunger and everyday human consumption because of the many uncertainties that arise. Genetic engineering in agriculture occurs through transferring a gene from one organism to another. Many scientist use genetic engineering to find solutions to the many problems that can arise during the growth of the crop. During the 1990’s the Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) used genetic engineering in peas to see if they could stop an insecticide that was killing the crop. What they hoped to achieve was a GM pea plant containing an anti-nutrient (alphaamylase inhibitor) that interferes with the bugs'
