To: Rowland Rowe From: Vanessa Barela Date: July 22, 2007 Subject: Individual Project Proposal Executive Summary: The purpose of this proposal is describe gas transfer and why it is important to wastewater treatment. Introduction : Gas transfer is a operation in many environmental engineering processes. It may involve either absorption of gas into or stripping of a gas out of the liquid phase. The transfer of oxygen to liquid systems is particularly important in the biological treatment of wastewaters. The purpose of this experiment is to measure the overall gas transfer coefficient (K LA ) during aeration and quantify the influence of water characteristics, including air flow rate, bubble size, temperature and mixing intensity, on gas transfer. Background: There are various types of aeration systems. The most common types used are mechanical aerators and diffused air systems. Mechanical aerators apply energy to the water causing splashing and turbulence to the surface, which increases the gas transfer
