The airport was constructed to replace  the old Kai Tak airport and to  accommodate the growing demands of  import/export and commercial flights. It was designed by Matt Connell, Foster  Associates, BAA. Construction was carried out by a  consortium of China State Construction  Engineering Corporation, Kumagai  Gumi (HK), Maeda Corporation;  Downer-Paul Y-McAlpine Joint Venture,  ICL Fujitsu, Thorn Europhane, SigNET  Ltd, DG Edgeworthy
