PAM 203 October 1, 2008 Why do married people live longer? -healthy people marry -protection -emotional support, higher income, less risk taking, buffer effects of stress, biological mechanisms -spurious -2 nd order selection: healthy people make more money which makes them more attractive potential partners in marriage Approaches o Follow similar people over time- does marriage help and divorce hurt? o Compare marriage to other forms of social support- is marriage better than cohabitation or a close friendship or family network o Compare unhappy marriage to happy marriage o Short term effects versus longer effects- divorced (whether they remarried or not) middle aged women are 60 percent more likelyt o have cardiovascular disease than women who remain married Religion o Denomination, mormans live longer
