Jay Jain Paper 2 ENGL 1101 February 20, 2008 Dr. Hoff “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education” (Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.). Finding a uniform definition for education is much more complicated than it seems. Webster’s dictionary defines education as “the action or process of educating or of being educated,” but what does this mean? Golden Door believes education involves giving children knowledge without asking them to think critically about that knowledge. From my experience at public schools, Malcolm Bridge Middle, we were given knowledge, but were asked to think critically about the knowledge given by applying the knowledge to real world applications. From this application of knowledge we would develop skill and character to make it in the real world. From this information one can come up with an acquired definition of what true education is – the teaching of knowledge to develop skill and character in any type of student. Elizabeth Kolbert in “Unchartered Territory,” writes about her experience of interviewing with the students of Golden Door to talk about their educational experiences. Golden Door cannot measure up to the learning experience that I got from Malcolm Bridge Middle School. Golden Door fails in the areas of passing knowledge and developing skills and character, in which shown Malcolm Bridge meets these three goals/criteria.
