¾ Electric force like gravity are long-range forces. These type of forces introduced the concept of action at a distance. ¾ The term field which comes from mathematics, describes a function f (x, y, z) that assigns a value to every point in space. ¾ When used in physics, it meant that the physical entity exists at every point in space. That is, what Faraday suggested about how the long-rang forces operate. ¾ The charge makes an alteration everywhere in space, then other charges respond to the alteration at their position. ¾ The altered space is the agent (cause) that exerts the force on B. 25.5 The Concept of a Field ¾ So we can call the alteration of the space around a mass is the gravitational field , and the space around a charge is altered to create the electric field. ¾ Now we can distinguish b/w the concept of a particle which was used in Newton’s laws of motion, to study the motion of a particle in space from one point to another (trajectory). ¾ and the field which exists at the same time at all points in space.
