Instructions for the Case Study (EF4330) Read the case “Whatever happened at Barings? The lure of derivatives and collapse” and write a report addressing (but not constrained to) the following questions: 1. What is Nick Leeson’s “legitimate” business in derivative trading at Barings? How is Leeson supposed to make money for the Barings? 2. What went wrong with Leeson’s derivative trading and resulted in big losses for the Barings? 3. From risk management point of view and at the strategic level, what should have been done differently to avoid this crisis at Barings? 4. Based on a number of disasters arising from derivatives trading by banks and corporations in recent years such as the case of the Barings, some believe that derivative financial products are “inherently dangerous” so that banks should keep away from trading such instruments. What are your comments on this view? Your report should be at least two pages long but no longer than 8 pages (double line spacing). Group work (up to four members per group) is encouraged even though

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
