Introduction to Biological Sciences 110a In class notes for November 26, 2007 Gene expression o Translation mRNA template/ genetic code To summarize where we are o SEE A o AUG is a start codon, so the first codon is always AUG. o There can be another AUG, but in this case it isn’t even part of the same codon Mutations we need to know o Silent/synonomous change You change a codon to another codon but there is no change in the amino acid that is encoded by that codon. o Missense A change in one codon to another, but there is a change in the amino acid that is coded by that particular codon. o Nonsense change You change an amino acid to a stop codon. You get premature termination and your peptide chain is to short. o Frameshift If you have a deletion of one or two base pairs within a reading frame, it will shift to a different reading frame and the wrong proteins will be incorporated from that point on. Now we are done with mRNA and will talk about tRNA and how it serves as an adaptor
