Introduction to Biological Sciences 110a In class notes for October 26, 2007 Nucleic Acid Structure o Primary structure 5’ CAG 3’ or 3’ GAC 5’ The convention for directionality is that the 5’ is on the left and the 3’ is on the right. o Secondary Structure Different for DNA and RNA DNA Structure o Double stranded helix o Sugar phosphate backbone o Bases attached to each sugar, projecting inward o The two strands are antiparallel Stabilization o Ion pairs; counterions (cations) Sodium neutralizes the charges o Hydrogen bonding between bases Called interstrand bonding Complementary base pairing Electronic complementary Geometrically complementary o Stacking interactions Bases attracted on another by induced dipole-dipole interations So two complementary strands would like to be 1 2 stranded molecule. Base pairs are perpendicular to the helicaxis There is about 10 basepairs per turn Grooves
