Introduction to Biological Sciences 110a In class notes for September 19, 2007 Eukaryotic cells o Very complex o Structure Plasma membrane surrounds the entire cell Nucleus is surrounded by two membranes and is the site of DNA replication, transcription, and RNA processing Everything in between the plama membrane and the nucleus is called the cytoplasm . The cytoplams consists of The cytosol (the liquid in the cell) The organelles (meaning membrane bound compartment) Organelles o Endoplasmic reticulum A large, rather complex compartment in the cell. In most cells it is continous with the outer nuclear membrane See A Made up of two distinct regions, called the rough ER and smooth ER Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum Made of interconnected tubules This shape gives it a large amount of membrane This is the site of syntesis of fatty acids Also the site of phospolipids and steriods (like cholesterol) Sex hormones are steriods All these molecules are hydrophobic, the membrane allows for a suitable environment The smooth ER in the liver helps remove bad things from the body Sequesters Ca ++ o In it’s surface the intergral membrane proteins pump calcium from the cytosol into the ER. There is a good deal more calcium in the ER than in the cytosol.

Introduction to Biological Sciences 110a In class notes for September 19, 2007 o Lumen refers to place inside ER. Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum It has a rough appearance because of the presence of bound ribosomes, which make proteins The rough ER is the site of a good bit of protein sythesis, particularly those
