Chapter 4 OWL due today Chapter 5 OWL available Last Lecture o Redox reactions Oxidation Reduction Reducing agent Oxidizing agent Today o Chapter 5 Gases Disproportionation: o 2Mn 3+ (aq) + H 2 O(l) → Mn 2+ (aq) + MnO 2 + 4H + (aq) o On Mn, on one side Mn is 3+, on the other they are 2+ and 4+ o Mn doesn’t like 3+, it would rather be 2+ or 4+, so one gives up an electron o So Mn is both oxidized and reduced Displaced Reactions o 2Ag + (aq) + Cu(s) → Cu 2+ (aq) + 2Ag(s) o Cu has “displaced” Ag from its “combinaton” w/ NO - 3 o (AgNO 3 )-----------→-----------(Cu(NO 3 ) 2 Gases o A gas will expand to fill any volume, and distribute itself evenly throughout that volume o A gas is a substance that is normally in gaseous state at ordinary conditions (25°C, 1 atm) Vapor o Gaseous form of a substance that is normally a liquid or solid at 25°C, 1 atm.
