General Chemistry 102a In class notes for September 12, 2007 OWL due 9/16 at 11:59pm Last lecture o Lewis structure o Resonance Today o VSEPR o Polarity VSPER (valance shell electron pair repulsion) o Geometrically describes a compound o If electrons pair to form a bond, so they only come together in pairs. o Valance electrons either pair to form bonds, or set in lone pair. Then they repel other electron pairs. o The pairs will get as geometrically far apart as possible o Lone pairs take up more space than bonding pairs o Lone pair> double bond> single bond o Geometries are based on steric number: the number of atoms plus lone pairs around a central atom.
