General Chemistry Lecture 102a In class notes for August 31, 2007 OWL registration- please try before Monday. You do not need to enter your student ID. You can use random number. Clickers will not be counted yet. Note correction to syllabus, the final is on Thursday December 20 th . Today Chapter 2, and some of Chapter 1 on Stoichiometry. Atoms are the basic building for chemistry. Formulas o Discrete whole number rations of atoms. Na Cl, means one sodium for every cholorine atom. C 6 H 12 O 6 , glucose K 3 FeC 6 N 6 , K 3 Fe(Cn) 6 o Exceptions Defects- YBa 2 Cu 3 O (9-x) , called 1-2-3 high temp super conductor YBa 2 Cu 3 O 9 “ideal” This compound does not do much (inert) when it is in its “ideal” state. Empirical Formula o Smallest whole number ratio possible Ethylene, C 2 H 4 in empirical formula is CH 2 Glucose, C 6 H 12 O 6 in empirical formula is CH 2 0 Glucose is a carbohydrate. o
