Political Science 10 notes May 12 Partisanship - the more partisan you are the more likely you will vote. You identify yourself with a party, therefore you are more likely to vote for  your party. Perceptual screen - once we establish and identification with a group to reinforce  our views, and we only listen to information that validates our views. Partisanship still important? Yes, proportion of pure independents has not gone up since 1950’s Partisanship is still the best predictor of the vote in national elections. Partisans do not have to investigate candidates because they stick to their  party. Most eligible voters don’t vote on a regular basis. Organization From machine/boss politics to the new age voter involvement. Old politics- Party officials made nomination choices Choose nominees for senator, house, governor Controlled all delegates at national presidential convention are all “super  delegates” Party “bosses” controlled nominating process- no need to campaign in
