Derek Kirby Creative Non-Fiction 1/25/09 Introduction by John D’Agata The short excerpt, “Introduction,” was an interesting, but confusing piece of work, in my opinion. It started out kind of boring, however. The opening few paragraphs were historical facts about Mesopotamia, which I had already learned during my freshman year of high school. It is an interesting concept, in some ways, how they invented so many things, and basically started civilization. The few paragraphs about how they developed transactions, warranties and marriage contracts were kind of confusing. They didn’t really seem to serve a point. I guess, it described the first actual transaction, warranty, and marriage contract, but all the names of people and cities, were really confusing. Another point of this story that was a little confusing was the letters from Deborah. I wasn’t sure what the point was that he was getting at. Maybe it was just me, but I did not understand his meaning of including those letters in this story. Even after the letters were
