The winter 1964, Nelson Mandela arrived on Robben Island where he is about to spend 18 of
his 27 prison years. The floor his bed, a bucket for the toilet, he was forced to do break hard
rocks in a quarry. He was allowed one visitor every year for 30 minutes, and he could write
and receive one letter every six months. But Robben Island transformed him, he became the
man to lead who would fight for his country, and win the political battles that would create a
new South Africa. That’s why we wanted to take the trip to Robben Island, because of how
great Nelson Mandela became inside the nasty cells.

We had an early start today, for our trip to Robben Island. The alarm woke us up 6:30 am, we
could see the dawn was just breaking and went out to the camping site. This was spectacular
with the lights of Cape Town shining beneath us and the orange glow of the sunrise starting
to shine over Table Bay.
