Marcus Knowlton Chemistry 110 Yan Bo The Wonderful World of Polymers Post Lab 1a. The (DP), the degree of polymerization is equal to (156000g/mol polystyrene)(104.15 g/mol styrene)= 1497g monomer units. 1b. The benzol peroxide might not have catalyzed the reaction for the formation of the polymers because each one does so independent of the others. Because there were multiple polymer unit molecules, s some may have grown faster than the others. 2a. 2b. In the polymerization of polyacrylonitrate and also in polystyrene the carbon atoms go from an sp 2 hybridized to an sp 3 hybridized orbital meaning they break their double bonds and go to single bonds. 3a. The polystyrene is water insoluble in water because it does not have hydroxyl groups sticking out causing hydrogen bonds with H 2 O causing it to break apart and it is made up of non polar hydrocarbon ring chains. Alginate is soluble in water because it does have the hydroxyl groups and as such is broken apart by interactions with the water. 3b.
