Descartes Philosophy 18/09/2008 14:39:00  Ancient-Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle Medieval philosophy-authority played a major role (3 main authorities=Bible, Church, Ancients) reject ideas of past authorities, think for ourselves=Descartes fundamental  move in finding modern philosophy o find something without doubt-with unshakable foundation so he clears away all that can be doubted-lots of things we think  we know, we don’t really know introduces 2 skeptical scenarios: *) Dream hypothesis- he’s dreaming. It seems like he’s awake, but he’s in fact  in his bed sleeping. **) Demon hypothesis-evil demon  who’s controlling his mind, producing false images which  don’t even exist. All he perceives are fictions created by  the evil demon He reasons-“For all I know, I might be dreaming and all
