AHA 1120/1120H: HISTORY OF WESTERN ART, II      Prof. Land Topic 1: The Early Renaissance in Italy:  “The Classical Recovery” The word "renaissance" means "rebirth" and in the context of fifteenth-century Italy refers to the rebirth  of the achievements of the Ancient Greeks and Romans, as seen through the eyes of enlightened  Christians.   Renaissance painting, sculpture and architecture had their beginnings in Florence in the  fifteenth century. The "new" architecture is primarily the creation of Filippo Brunelleschi. who turned to  such Ancient works as the Pantheon in Rome for inspiration and guidance. He created a modern  architecture that was based on the recovery of the "vocabulary" and "grammar" of Ancient architecture.  Later   in   the   century,   the   humanist   Leon   Battista   Alberti.   Continued   the   practice   of   studying   the  architecture of Antiquity.   In sculpture, Donatello, Nanni di Banco and others created a style that
