HIPAA: READ ME FIRSTHealth Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) enacted in 1996 as a federal rule under healthcare reform. The main purpose of this act is to improve the healthcare system in terms of privacy or confidentiality and security of health information, to reduce healthcare costs and make administrative process simple and less complex. It also helps people in keeping their health insurance. Health organizations are required to follow HIPAA in term of security and privacy rules. According to the HIPAA Privacy rule, patient’sinformation cannot be given to other people without any consent, and it should be protected in all conditions. While, Security rule ensures the safety of patient’s health information. HIPAA is divided into other different sections that address different issues in the healthcare system and their related healthcare reform. There are two major sections inHIPAA, which focuses on the portability and administrative simplification. Portability permits people to have their health insurance while changing their work from one job to other, so they have coverage all the time. Under administrative simplification section, it provides regulations and standards for receiving, processing, transferring, and upholding health information. It also ensures security and privacy of health information. Under the HIPAA, the electronic data necessities were done to inspire the healthcare system to use electronic system instead of the manual system in handling and transmitting health information. While on micro level, we are accountable to the patients, their families, and all the other staff members who are at higher positions.
