Zach Nuffer 1. a. 1) The BNB222 modulator could decrease the amount of glutamate released from the pre-synaptic cell (in response to an action potential) via a second messenger mechanism that decreases the activity of the proteins involved in neurotransmitter release. Since glutamate is excitatory, if less is released, then the resulting epsp in the post-synaptic cell will be smaller. This assertion applies to the rest of the question as well. 2) The BNB222 modulator could also decrease the amount of glutamate released by decreasing the amount Ca 2+ entering the terminal by a second messenger system that causes less Ca 2+ to enter through Ca 2+ channels (perhaps by closing faster, or reducing permeability). 3) Finally, the BNB222 modulator could cause voltage-gated K + channels to open faster upon depolarization, again by a second messenger system. This would cause the cell to be depolarized for less time (repolarize faster), so less Ca 2+ could enter, and therefore less glutamate would be released. 1. b.
