Chemical Reaction in solution Concentration of Aqueous Solutions Mass % One way of expressing the concentration of a solute in a solution is to report the % by mass. If we have 5.00 g of NaCl dissolved in100.0 g of water, we can calculate the % by mass . Mass % for NaCl = (5.00 g NaCl)x100/(105 g) = 4.76% Because of the convenience of measuring volumes of liquids, certain quantities of chemical are measured by their volume. A solution consists of one or more solutes (minor components) dissolved in a solvent (major component). Concentrations of solutions are expressed in moles of a solute in a certain volume of solution. Molarity (M) ( mol of solute/L of solution) = Number of moles of solute per liter of solution Solution: solute (minor component) + solvent (major component)

We need to know the density of the solution (Given: density of the solution is 1.01 g/mL). Solution: Volume = 105 g/(1.01 g/mL) = 103.96 mL # mol of NaCl = (5 g NaCl) x[1 mol/(22.99 g + 35.45 g) = 0.086 mol Molarity = 0.086 mol/(0.10396 L) = 0.83 M Preparation of Aqueous Solutions Aqueous solutions are prepared by weighing out the proper amount of solute in grams, using a volumetric flask to measure the volume and adding enough water to give the final volume of the solution.
