The History of a Naturalist; Charles Darwin The term ‘naturalist’ is a very broad term and it varies in meaning from person to person. Typically, a naturalist is viewed as someone who takes a particular interest in natural history. Natural History is also an ambiguous term, which is usually construed to be the study of living things. Many scientific disciplines fall under this broad spectrum, such as biology, botany, zoology, paleontology, ecology, biochemistry, geology, astronomy, physics, and meteorology. Because the term natural history encompasses so many different fields of study, the term naturalists can be applied to a large number of scientists. Naturalists have paved the way through exploring the world around us and explaining unknown phenomenon. Naturalists have been the source of religious ideology for centuries and it some times takes decades for their work to be recognized. There have been a countless number of naturalists in modern history that have made a positive impact upon the development of technology and scientific knowledge, however, Charles Darwin, a controversial 19 th century naturalists, certainly stands out among fellow naturalists. Like every individual, Charles Darwin’s traits and personality were greatly shaped by his unique upbringing. Charles Robert Darwin was born on February 12 th , 1809 in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England. He was born the son of Robert and Susannah Darwin, a prominently wealthy family in Shrewsbury (Charles Darwin). Darwin was born and raised in the renowned home built by his father in 1800, dubbed “The Mount (Charles Darwin).” He was born into a normal sized family of the time; Darwin was the fifth of six children. believers of Unitarianism as well as the conventional Anglicanism (Charles Darwin). Despite Darwin’s later condemnation from the church, Charles Darwin was an active Christian throughout his life. Charles Darwin’s family background had a seemingly large impact upon his life choices and journey. Darwin’s father, a successful Shrewsbury medical doctor, Robert Darwin, paved the way for his son’s forthcoming intellectual mindset. Studying at the University of Leiden, he received his MD from the University of Edinburgh in 1786, when he was only 20 years old (Robert Darwin). Little is known about Charles Darwin’s mother, but her maiden name was Wegdwood; Darwin also married into the Wegdwood
