Depression: sometimes called affective disorder, is intense sadness: a despair that can be painfully persecuting and drains all meaning from life. The most frequently diagnosed in the English=speaking world. Diagnosed when for at least two weeks the sufferer is unbearably sad or depressed, or has lost pleasure in nearly all activities, along with inability to sleep, lack of energy, slowed down in actions, inability to concentrate, suicide b. Anxiety: involve overwhelming fears together with more protracted moods of disabling anxiety, avoidance of what is most especially feared, loss of personal confidence c. Psychiatric epidemiology: the statistical study of how frequently disorders occur i. Depression and anxiety states were nearly twice as common in women as in men, women were also much more likely than men to have had one of the five kinds of anxiety disorder diagnosed ii. Men has higher prevalence of alcohol, drug abuse, antisocial personality disorder iii. There is no gender difference in prevalence of depression in childhood, in adolescence the difference becomes large and stays so. There are also differences in prevalence as a function of income iv. The prevalence of depression in Western countries is far higher than in Eastern countries v. When studying depression in Switzerland, Canada, Japan, and Iran, a core cluster of symptoms occurred in all four countries: sadness, joylessness, anxiety, and lack of energy.
