A physiologist is interested in “how things work.” Formal Definition: The biological study of the functions of living organisms and their parts. (American Heritage Dictionary) – Animal Physiology / Plant Physiology Operational Definition: The study of how cells interact with their “environment” to obtain the things required for life (“vital” substances). – Vital Substances = water, salts, oxygen, nutrients, heat, etc.
