Week 2 1. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) was passed into legislation in March of 2010. Identify the impact of this legislation on your nursing practice by choosing two key nursing provisions outlined in the American Nurses Association "Key Provisions Related to Nursing" summary at ? docID=1241&verID=1 . Discuss how these two provisions have impacted, or will impact, your current practice of nursing. DQ1 Posted 9/7 There are a variety of different ways that the Affordable Care Act has affected nursing. One specific way in which it has affected it nurses are those that work in poverty or low- income areas. Nurses that choose to work in a public health workforce. Those who can work in a public health area are offered a loan repayment option. This program is to ensure that adequate health care professionals are available, in efforts to eliminate the shortage. This repayment program assists with repayment of one-third of loans incurred for a 3-year agreement with that public health agency. The Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA) is “ programs provide health care to people who are geographically isolated, economically or medically vulnerable” (HRSA, 2016). The HRSA has a website () that shows what agencies are eligible for loan reimbursement. Another grant that may be of interest to me is the Pediatric Health Care Workforce reform. This reform states “ loan repayment program for individuals who are willing to practice in a pediatric medical or surgical subspecialty or in child mental and behavioral health care for at least 2 years in an underserved area” (ANA, 2010). The recipient is eligible to receive up to 35,000 per year in loan repayments. The area in which I currently work does not offer grants for employment. These grants my take away perspective nurses into these areas. Nurses may also decide leave there current position and move into an area that they are able to take advantage of these benefits. This could increase the current shortage within the hospital I currently work for.
