Biology 1208: Writing Assignment #3 Brooke Adams Lab Section: 11 “Hemolysis Time for Bovine RBCs in Solutions of Propanol” Problem: Does the number of hydroxyl groups affect the permeability of the cell membrane and thus affect the amount of time it takes the bovine red blood cell to lyse? Null Hypothesis: The number of hydroxyl groups of the solute will not affect the permeability of the RBC or the amount of time it takes the cell to lyse. Alternate Hypothesis: The number of hydroxyl groups of the solute will affect the permeability of the RBA and the amount of time it takes the cell to lyse. Prediction: The amount of time it takes the cell to lyse depends on the number of hydroxyl groups. The solute with the least amount of hydroxyl groups will lyse at the fastest rate. Methods/Procedure: 1.) Label culture tubes for test solutions 1-3 (propanol,1; propandiol,2; propantriol,3) and 0 for a blank. 2.) Pipette 4 mL of the appropriate test solution into each numbered test tube.
