Lister 1 Michael Lister Heather Miller Music History 120 Sec 002 11/12/2007 Led Zeppelin's Masterpiece Introduction Many people argue about which songs are considered legendary and which ones are not. It is a proven fact, though, that Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" is one of the most played rock radio songs in history. The song has been analyzed and broken down hundreds of times and it is not hard to see why the song is so popular. It invokes people's emotions and its transformation from a slow, mellow sound to a head banging tune at the end of the song which sets it apart from the rest. Analysis of the song answers the questions of why this multi- movement suite became such a phenomenon. The song "Stairway to Heaven" was extremely influential upon other musicians and regular listeners and invoked questions about the greater meaning of life and the way that people should live. Biography The band Led Zeppelin was an English rock band formed in 1968 and was composed of guitarist Jimmy Page, vocalist Robert Plant, drummer John Bonham, and bass guitarist and keyboardist John Paul Jones (Davis 23). They were considered one of the first heavy metal groups and incorporated a large variety of musical genres including reggae, soul, funk, rockabilly, folk, pop, and country. The band toured extensively and continued to release albums more successful than the previous until the most popular album Led Zeppelin IV , which contains the song "Stairway to Heaven." The song was composed over a long period of time by Jimmy Page and was completed in 1971 with the addition of lyrics by Robert Plant (74). The artistic and musical genius of Led Zeppelin would go on to influence many other hard rock bands such as Deep Purple and Black Sabbath.
