Mamie and Kenneth Clark. These tests showed that African-American children tended to favor white dolls over black dolls, i.e. most selected the white doll as “pretty”, “nice”, and the one they preferred to play with. The tests were conducted in the 1930s & 1940s, and the Clarks served as expert testimony in school desegregation cases leading to 1954 Brown v. Board of education in which the U.S. Supreme Court overturned legal segregation of public schools, or so-called “separate but equal” black and white schools as predicated on 1896 Plessy v. Ferguson. Davis recreated the tests with African-American children in 2005 New York City, and showed results that were remarkably unchanged 60 years later, despite the end of legal segregation and the Civil Rights movement.
